Dedication, desire to understand the animal, interaction with
animal will improve his skill.

Controlling the elephant while riding it is an expert job and
requires special skills. Elephant can become explosively violent
even at the slightest provocation and more so if frightened from its
back.

Develop observational skill. Observe the animal, standing at a
distance. Note its mood, behaviour responses in different situation.
Elephants can react in lighting speed. He should be ready to handle
such situations.

At the very sign of musth elephant should be tethered. Elephant
in musth should not be made to work nor subjected to punishment
by depriving food and water.

In the event of elephant running amuck mahout should not leave
the animal seeking his safety, but put up a brave face, use tact and
common sense. This will help to reduce loss of life and property
and avoid dangerous situations.

You cannot change the elephant’s temperament, but you can
and have to change yourself for the good and lasting results.

Elephant can attack mahout with its trunk; two tusk, four limbs
and tail. Hence the old saying “elephant has eight tools to attack
you”. Elephant in musth is a dangerous as a wild one.

Elephant is highly adaptable and hence can be trained for
different situation. But these training should be done humanely.

Logging elephants and festival elephants are different and
require different tactics to control them. Riding on it, better controls
logging elephants. But in elephant used for festivals, it is better for
the mahouts to remain on the ground and control the animal. If the
animal is used for both purposes it has to be trained in that style.
During festivals hobbles are to be put.

Reinforcement of obedience protocols should be done every day.
Elephant should be subjected to these protocols daily. Daily practice
is a must to retain the skills and retain the dominance of mahout.
