Many elephant camps make biogas, which is supplied to
the mahout camps, and even lighting the area during
night, The riding gear (Ambari or Houdha) is made up of
very light material, like cane at some places fibre glass.
Seating is either parallel or tandem. The tandem, ones
are used for riding in the forest for better photographic
access. The name of the riding elephant is written on the
riding gear and that too is important while taking
photographs. The riders are given a small write up on
the elephants that they rode which they keep.

Treats like banana and sugar cane is available and
many tourists feel happy to buy some and feed
elephants as treat. Children of mahouts approach us
with treats like banana or sugar cane on even jaggery
balls, to buy and feed the elephants. Something similar
to candles in Christian pilgrim centres or incense sticks.
Incidentally this is also an additional income. Generous
tip is another attraction for the mahout. The elephant
photographs are autographed by the mahouts! What an
encouragement for the person and the profession.

There are several similar camps, at different places in
Thailand. Some of the other performances are traditional
elephant capture, mock war between kings with their war
elephants; rather a replay of things of past. Some camps
get trainees from abroad.

The Lampung run a mahout training centre, where
persons from different countries come and learn the art
of mahoutry. With such an excellent and skilled mahouts
in Kerala there is tremendous scope for this type of
hands on and hand off training. Not only keepers of
elephant come at this centre but also elephant
managers from other countries visit this centre. When I
visited the place it had almost an international presence,
trainees at different level of trained skill. Some of them
were very proud to say that they are to qualify within
such and such time. Some of them are in-service
candidates from developed countries to upgrade their
skills and knowledge about elephants.
