In the adjacent country Cambodia also has some tourist
centres using elephants for tourist attraction. But
Cambodia a war ravaged country for long time is slowly
building this up. There are road signs similar to the one,
which we used, have “School go slow” with a child
running with shoulder bag. (Now those boards are not
common, probably they will have to show a caricature of
Dobie’s donkey, the plight of present child labour!)
These road signs means that there is elephant ride
available there and you can stop the vehicle and look
around for the elephant and the stepladder and platform
to get on to the elephant.

Sri Lanka is not lagging behind in any way, in promoting
elephant based tourism. They attract people, especially
Buddhists for the Buddhist festivals like perahera
(Pooram!), for which a large number of elephants are
paraded. The Kandy perahera is just over. Kandy is the
temple where Lord Buddha’s tooth is kept.  the
Ratnapura perahera is during Onam days. Fifty to sixty
elephants participate in these festivals. In Sri Lanka most
of the elephants are mahknas (tusk- less males).
Elephants are decorated with elaborate ornamental
clothes, and they even put serial bulbs on elephants, an
interesting sight to see. The ears are covered with silk
satin cloth. Copra baskets replace our oil torches in the
processions.

The elephant riding sites in Sri Lanka are small but are
many and spotted in several parts of this island nation.
The spots will have number of informative materials
about elephants, which includes literature, diagrams,
photographs etc. Hands on experience is also are
provided. I saw a couple. One of them helps the mahout
in scrubbing the elephant while the spouse videogrphs it.
These riding facilities also provide food and
refreshments, some places with beer and toddy in
canned form. Many places make biogas as well as value
added products like paper and handicrafts made out of
elephant dung pulp. Diagrams and charts, as well as
parts of elephant body, mostly bony portions like skull,
teeth, vertebrae etc. are exhibited.
