Elephant paintings are not very popular in Sri Lanka as in
Thailand. Singapore zoo also sells elephant paintings.
There is already an enquiry from US about elephant
paintings from Kerala. She is a designer from New York
and would like to make use of the paintings in fabric
designing and sell. She will be too willing to share the
profits if she makes. But we need elephant artists for it.
She is expected in Kerala at the end of December 2006.

In India organised large scale elephant ride is taking place
only at Jaipur and there are hundred and odd elephants
are used for this purpose. Elephants used are mostly cow
elephants. Recently there was an accident, in which one of
the tourists got fatally injured and the mahout too got
injured in the ensuing melee. These elephants are used to
carry tourists to the Amber fort at Jaipur. Honestly my first
enjoyable elephant ride was at Jaipur in 1972, but during
those days, it was not that organised. Out of the riding
income a portion goes to the tourism department and they
in turn aggressively promote elephant ride. Now they are
planning an elephant village to accommodate one hundred
elephants. This itself will be another attraction for tourists.
But as many, will know the summer in Rajasthan is hot and
not at all conducive for the elephants. An NGO. “Elephant
Family” a UK based charity is organising an elephant clinic
for these elephants. One elephant veterinarian from
Myanmar (Burma) is their current expert. There is a vet
from Kerala (Dr. Madhulal) working there in one of the
NGO named HIS (Help In Suffering) an Australian charity.

Kerala stands a good scope elephant based tourism, like
the one that is being done in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan
facilities do not need big infrastructures of finances, as is
the case in Thailand. We possess most handsome tuskers
in the world. Nowhere else in the world there is such a
large collection of tuskers, and it is high time we capitalise
on it. Now Kerala promotes health tourism, monsoon
tourism, tour in the mountains and backwaters. But I am
sure that elephant based tourism will be most exciting and
challenging. Few elephant owners can join together and
start doing it. There should be tie up with tour operators
sharing the income.  But we will need some capacity
building of mahouts, which is in its low ebb now. They
should not only know how to handle the elephant but also
learn more about elephants to satisfy the questions of
tourists as well as handle tourists itself. There are different
ways of doing it. Some accreditation will also be required
so that tourists get their value for money and do not get
cheated. They should not be taken for a ride, instead of
elephant ride! Kerala has already some name in the world
of elephants it will not be difficult to make use this brand
image in promoting this kind of tourism.

I am sure that Kerala villages will soon find foreign tourists
waving their hand with the local people and carry happy
memories back home, longing to come again as well
recommending others to come or join them.
